After Watching In-Person, Georgia Forward Recaps Maryland Offer

AAU season is sweeping the nation as college coaches get a closer look at their new and existing targets. Maryland took advantage and watched Team Curry late last week to get a closer look at Grayson (GA) power forward Chauncey Wiggins and after showing interest for months, it didn’t take long for the Terps to ante up with assistant Danny Manning on the sidelines.

“He saw me play on Friday morning and then in the afternoon. The assistant coach texted me, Danny Manning, so we were talking, and then the head coach, Mark Turgeon, he told me he wanted to offer me a scholarship,” Wiggins told Inside the Black & Gold. “I was excited about it.”

Wiggins had been in touch with Maryland since last fall as former assistant Bino Ranson got in early and developed a consistent relationship. The interest began nearly two years ago when Wiggins took in the Michigan State home game back in 2020 with his teammates. “During 15U when I was playing with TSF, I went on a visit there when they played Michigan State so I know a little bit about them.”

With an offer now in-hand, Wiggins admitted he holds the Terps in high regard but will need to dive back into the details of how Turgeon runs his program and how he fits on the court. “That game was a while ago so I honestly need to do my research on them.” Prior to Maryland, Wichita State extended a verbal offer as Wiggins was elated to receive an offer from his dad’s alma mater. “Yeah that was a pretty cool offer to receive.”

With offers from Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt among others, Wiggins took in three return visits last month as the in-state Yellow Jackets have taken advantage of the close proximity to home. “I visited Auburn, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. It was like my fourth or fifth time to Georgia Tech and my second visit to Auburn and Clemson.”

Wiggins admitted he’s unsure whether he plans to take additional visits following AAU season and prior to the beginning of his senior season, but knows which two factors he looks into first when analyzing his suitors. “Probably who I’m going to play with and what’s his coaching style.”

Alongside fellow target Christ Essandoko, Team Curry went 3-4 during this weekend’s tournament as Wiggins scored 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the second win on Friday. “I feel like my confidence got better. I just need to rebound more because I’m not doing that enough,” Wiggins added. “As a collective, as a team, we just weren’t playing defense but the games we won, we always scored. It’s no problem, just have to get better on defense.”

Wiggins is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the nation’s 25th-best power forward.
