It’s been a busy few months for St. Paul’s (MD) four-star Cahron Wheeler, who became one of the most sought after prospects in the DMV in the 2027 cycle. After Ohio State became the first offer last fall, it became a running list of Power Four schools to eventually jump into the fold as South Carolina, Texas A&M, Georgia, LSU and Auburn all jumped into the picture. Syracuse and Vanderbilt became the latest two schools to jump into the mix, while Auburn is one week removed from hosting him for his first visit to The Plains.
But after initially planning to visit Texas A&M this weekend, Wheeler opted for the shorter trip to campus alongside Tyzon Swann, a top ten prospect in the 2028 class, to College Park where it proved to be an important visit for the top local target.
Wheeler, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound edge rusher, has now finalized plans to officially visit Maryland beginning June 19. The expectation through the spring was the hometown team would draw the final weekend available, but that became official on a visit where he also got a chance to reconnect with a pair of familiar faces in edge rusher Sidney Stewart and quarterback Malik Washington. Established relationships with both the staff and roster resonate with Wheeler.
“After practice I got to talk to him. It was very good honestly, kind of catching up,” Wheeler said.
The local four-star also noted lead recruiter Aazaar Abdul-Rahim “calls me a lot” as the two have built a strong relationship through the fall, while Saturday’s visit gave Wheeler a chance to sit down with both him and head coach Mike Locksley.
“I’ve spent a lot of time when they’re not coaching and they’re the exact same people when they are and aren’t coaching. I feel like my relationship with them is pretty good,” Wheeler said.
Maryland isn’t the only school set to host Wheeler with plans to officially visit Clemson the weekend of May 29 then Florida the weekend of June 5. Wheler added he’s “thinking about scheduling Tennessee after I go visit” later this spring.
As a junior, Wheeler posted eight sacks, 26 solo tackles, 30 total tackles and one fumble recovery while being named to the MIAA All-Conference team.
