Maryland athletic director Damon and Evans revealed on Thursday he doesn’t have a “specific timeline” to name the next head coach, but he did offer a more urgent tone in his explanation.
“Let's just say this, sooner rather than later,” Evans said on 105.7 Vinny and Haynie show. “Obviously, the tournament's underway, and we hope to get someone in here soon. We'll continue to go about our process and do our due diligence, but I'm excited that we're at this time of the year and hope to be announcing the coach sometime soon.”
Mike Brey and Kevin Willard remain two names that continue to draw buzz for the Terps’ head coaching vacancy with both now set to play on the same day. Notre Dame kept themselves alive after a thrilling double overtime win over Rutgers on Wednesday night, setting the stage for a Friday showdown against Alabama. Meanwhile Seton Hall awaits TCU in an 8-9 matchup. This time around, however, Evans didn’t tip his hand on whether the candidate was even currently in the NCAA Tournament. “You know, maybe, maybe not. I can’t show my hands,” Evans joked. “No, you know, obviously, as I've said before we're canvasing the country. I know our fans are anxious and excited as we are here and we're looking forward to celebrating our new head coach but there's a lot of basketball still to be played and so I hope people are out there watching and enjoying themselves just as we are.”
Evans still maintained the same stance as to what qualities were most important in the Terps’ next head coach.
“One thing I've been watching basketball all season, really been evaluating coaches and you take a look at how they are out of timeouts, their demeanor on the sideline, style of play, how the student-athletes respond to them. So there's a bunch of different factors. You know, coming out of timeouts and running plays I think is significant, how they adjust and adapt during the game and the pace and flow. So those are a few of the things that we look at and fortunately enough for us we've been able to do that for quite some time.”
