Maryland men's basketball was able to get back in the win column on Wednesday night after Jahmir Young scored the team's final eight points, including a game-winning layup with two seconds left, to secure a comeback 69-67 win over Iowa. Young has been nothing short of dazzling in his second season with the program, scoring 20 points or more in seven of his last nine games, leading AD Damon Evans to make his pitch for Young's postseason accolades. “Well, Jahmir has been playing at a high level all year. I think we've seen that. I actually think he’s been playing at a level which he should be serious consideration for Big Ten Player of the Year," Evans said on his weekly appearance on 105.7. "He's been carrying our team. He has a lot of confidence and for him just to take the game over like he did, score the last eight points for us and make the game-winning shot, speaks volumes to his ability. But our team as a whole, the defensive effort was outstanding. We continue to rely on our defense and we've done that. And finally won one of these one possession games because we've had so many that we lost, but a Quad One win is good for our program and we need to start stacking them.” Maryland will now look to capitalize on the road win after moving up nine spots in the updated NET rankings, from 99 to 92, and 2-4 in Quad One games. They'll have another Quad One opportunity on Saturday afternoon when Nebraska heads to College Park in search of their third consecutive win. “We’ve got to continue to play defense," Evans said on how Maryland can build off Wednesday's win. "We gotta rely on our defense and our defense has bailed us out quite a bit as of late and then we just got to get over the hump. One of the things, unfortunately for us, we've had some turnovers. If we can cut down on the turnovers which gives us more possessions, more opportunities to score especially in a one possession game, the outcome could be very, very different, but I'm excited about the fight in this team. They don't give up. They continue to press forward and that's what all you can ask for. And if you continue to do that, you'll have a chance to have some success.” More from AD Damon Evans: On former Georgia LB Roquan Smith, upcoming AFC Championship game between Ravens-Chiefs “He’s a great player. He's proven that he did it at Georgia and now he's doing it in the league, has been doing that for a number of years. I like the Ravens. I was fortunate to be at the game last week and watch them win that game over the Houston Texans. Lamar's just playing outstanding football and this is going to be a tough task. You’ve got Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City coming in, but I do like the Ravens and what they've been doing and look forward to a victory.” On Maryland’s non-rev sports “Last night guys, we had a tough one in women's basketball . We led the majority of the game and then at the end, we let one get away from us. But women's basketball team is still in a position to make yet another tournament. I'm excited about what's going on in our other sports, especially getting our lacrosse programs started. We had a scrimmage the other week, last week, and our team played well on the men's side. And when you look at the caliber of those two programs and John Tillman and Cathy Reese and the championships, it's really exciting any time you can start that out. Our wrestling team had some tough losses, but we'll have an opportunity to go against I think the number one team in the country, Penn State, this Sunday in The Pavilion so I encourage everyone to come out and support them. Tennis is off to a great start with two wins over Georgetown and George Washington. And I also want to mention the fact that I think a lot of people know we're putting up a new scoreboard in Xfinity Center, a new sound system. want to make sure that we provide the fans with a great experience and continue to add to our facilities, so things are moving along at Maryland right now.” On Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan for the NFL “You can't say it's a surprise. This was coming. He did a good job for Michigan, obviously winning the national championship, winning the past I think three Big Ten titles and really positioning that program. So not a surprise to see him leave. He's had success in the NFL and Sherone Moore, he did a good job while he stepped in as interim coach. No one can take that away from him. So if that's who Warde and Michigan decide to go with, I think that'd be a good choice of for them, but make no mistake about it, Michigan is a blue blood in football and they’re a program that you get the right person, yu're going to have some great success there.” Related Links
