'26 Pa. tight end details his fit in Maryland's offense after offer, visit

It didn’t take long after arriving in College Park on Saturday for 2026 Seneca Valley (PA) TE Adam Gehm to get the sense he was on the verge of picking up his second Big Ten offer. “Really when I got there, all the coaches were there greeting me and that's when I knew they were really interested in me and I was going to get an offer today,” Gehm told IBG. Assistant Zac Spavital led the way as the area recruiter for the 6-foot-5.5, 228-pound tight end as they’ve been in contact since mid-June, but Saturday gave the two a chance to dial into the Terps’ recruiting strategy in its early stages. “He said when he recruits a player, he’s trying to find that piece of the puzzle to fit in where it’s every player he’s recruiting is an important piece,” Gehm said of Spavital. After getting an in-depth look around the facilities, Gehm then got to meet tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin for the first time where they turned on the film to show why the Pennsylvania athlete fits into the Terps’ scheme. “He showed me a little bit about what the tight ends really do and how they work in the offense and what's really behind the whole recruiting thing, which I thought was really cool. He was showing me game film of all their tight ends split out of the box, everything I need to know about how they run them and use them which is really, I think, important for making my recruiting process easier,” he added. “I think it's definitely great and fit what I've been shown. He's recruiting guys that fit the personnel and what he showed me is definitely something that resembles my game and what I can match up to. It's definitely an offensive scheme that fits me.” Gehm’s recruitment has picked up since Wisconsin became the first Power Four offer back in April with Tennessee, North Carolina, Indiana, Penn State and Pitt among the schools in contact. “I think it’s less stressful because I know coaches who contact me are interested rather than I send these messages to coaches that I’m not sure of 100%. So I think it’s great that coaches can finally reach out to me directly, show their interest,” Gehm said of the recruiting process. The Tar Heels could be a school to watch as a potential offer in the fall. “ Freddie Kitchens told me if I get down there for a game, he’d love to offer me,” Gehm added. While he’s open to returning to College Park in the fall for a home game, the rising junior is currently planning to attend Penn State’s ‘White Out’ on Nov. 9 vs. Washington, Tennessee’s mid-October home game vs. Alabama and “a few Wisconsin games.” Adam Gehm is currently unrated by On3.
