'23 WR Nasir Addison commits to Maryland, breaks down decision

2023 Irvington (NJ) wide receiver Nasir Addison has announced his commitment to Maryland.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound wideout gave his verbal to the staff last Sunday and held offers from Boston College, Virginia, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Temple, and UMass while Kentucky and Pittsburgh were two schools in consistent pursuit. The news comes just one week after Addison’s second visit to Maryland, where his family was able to meet with the coaches and bask in the facilities for the first time. Addison first visited Maryland back on July 31 when he and teammate Adon Shuler visited for an on-campus, invite-only recruiting event.

“The first time I went, it definitely took me away. I loved it and the second time, it was basically for my mom to see for herself what I’m going into and she loved it,” Addison told Inside the Black and Gold last week.

The stamp of approval from mom sealed the deal. “She’s a vice principal so she knows everything academically that I need, socially. She wanted to see it was good growing up and it was the right fit for me and she loved it, so that kind of sealed the deal.”

Cornerbacks coach Henry Baker led Addison’s recruitment as the two sides, along with receivers coach Zohn Burden, were able to reconnect on the field prior to Friday’s game. “I got a chance to look at the facilities with my mom, my family which they loved it so I loved it too. I was on the field with coach [Henry] Baker and coach Zohn [Burden] when they were doing warmups and stuff and that was fun, too. They just told me to make sure I have a fun time. We hung out a little bit, we had dinner then we were talking about academics and the academic facilities, the engineering building. It’s amazing.”

The loss didn’t impact Addison’s outlook on the Terps as he knew the team is capable of playing better than shown during his first game visit. “They were telling us the penalties killed us and it just snowballed. But it’s football, it happens and they just have to focus on next week because next week is a big game too. They’ll learn from the mistakes they made in the past game.” Addison gives Maryland an early receiver commitment with length, while Irvington head coach Ashley Pierre says Addison is “one of the fastest guys I would say in the state of New Jersey.”

“It’s true speed when it comes to running and then he brings length. He’s like a 10.7 100-meter track guy, he’s long, about 6-foot-2 and he’s still so young,” he added. “[Nas] potentially could be 6-foot-3 when it’s all said and done. Super talented kid, fast as heck, good with his hands. He’s a kid that could actually play receiver or cornerback at the next level. He’s so long. His limbs are long. A lot of schools are on him, Kentucky loves him, Pitt loves him so a lot of schools love him because not a lot of guys can run like him.”

Addison becomes the second commitment for Maryland in the 2023 cycle and ironically, the second commitment out of New Jersey. Addison joins St. Peter’s Prep (NJ) three-star Robert ‘Champ’ Long while Addison, a three-star prospect according to Rivals, becomes the first skill position verbal for the Terps.

Addison is rated a three-star prospect and the 11th-best prospect in New Jersey by Rivals.
