2024 Guard Has Maryland in Top Group After Visit, Sets Two Official Visits

2024 St. John's (DC) three-star guard Daquan Davis planned to make it to College Park last weekend for his first game of the season as Maryland defeated Nebraska, 82-63. “I made it there just in time,” Davis added. He got a chance to stay for the full game where he watched Maryland’s guards combine for 34 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three from Don Carey. That stuck out to Davis, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard, as Maryland's guards controlled the game. “I liked it a lot. I like how coach lets them play. Coach Cox texted me , he was like ‘see how we’re using Jahmir ?’ it’s a good style of play. I like how he’s letting them just play their game,” Davis told IBG. “That’s what I’m looking for, honestly.” After arriving just prior to tipoff, Davis stayed for the full game and took in the postgame celebration before reconnecting with the staff in person. “I went back there with the staff. I had my girlfriend with me but we both went back in there and we were just all talking, it was just chill.” Assistant David Cox has led the way ever since last summer’s offer, even trekking to the WCAC powerhouse for practices and games through the fall into winter, and Davis admits he’s built a strong rapport so far. “He’s been reaching out. He texted me earlier. He’s real chill with me, he thinks it’s the spot. I feel really comfortable with coach Cox. He’s a great person. I like everything they’ve got going on. I like how the campus is set up, how they do everything.” With a host of high major offers, Davis will look to trim his list of suitors heading into the spring. “I’m about to cut my schools down to either three or five. I already got a top two but I want to make other schools before I make that decision. I know I’m going to visit Mississippi State and Butler.” Both visits are scheduled for officials with Mississippi State up first in late February, and while the Terps are under consideration for an official, they’re also well positioned heading into the tailend of Davis’ junior season. “Maryland is definitely in it, they’re in the top two. I definitely know that I can see myself at Maryland.” Davis is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the fourth-best prospect in DC and 135th-best prospect nationally.
