Young Terps: Maryland hammers Virginia, nonconference recap

Welcome back for the latest episode of Young Terps, where we recap how Maryland fared in their nonconference finale on Friday night.

Maryland used 42 unanswered points to move to 3-0 last night, scoring touchdowns on five of their last seven drives before Billy Edwards Jr. checked in, but that also meant head coach Mike Locksley saw his team fall into another early 14-0 deficit inside SECU Stadium for the second straight week. What’s leading to the slow starts? What is correctable through the first three weeks?

Taulia Tagovailoa recorded his 13th career 300-yard passing game at Maryland as they amassed nearly 500 yards of total offense in the win, but the run game struggled. While many called for Roman Hemby to have a big game against a Cavaliers defense that has struggled to stop the run, it was Colby McDonald who led the way in both attempts and yards despite the experienced trio combining for four rushing touchdowns. Is there cause for concern for Maryland’s rushing attack? Plus, what to make of the offensive line with Gottlieb Ayedze making his season debut.

We take a look at what stuck out from Maryland’s biggest win over Virginia in the border war, both good and bad. Was there a player or two that surpassed expectations?

Plus, with Maryland now wrapped up with its nonconference slate, we take a look at how Maryland has fared compared to preseason expectations. What and who has lived up to the hype early on? Has anything surpassed expectations? And where does Maryland need to improve the most?
