WR Mekhai White commits to Maryland, breaks down his decision

Maryland football has picked up its 18th commitment of the 2024 cycle after King George (VA) three-star wide receiver Mekhai White went public with his commitment on Tuesday night.

Maryland was just the second school to extend White an offer nearly three years ago and now, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver will head to College Park with Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia Tech his other finalists. White is planning to enroll early in College Park and explains why Maryland won out.

“I just felt comfortable there. Out of all the schools, that’s where home was. I had real relationships with everybody there,” White told IBG.

Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has stayed in pursuit of the Virginia athlete dating back to last summer while Maryland watched White during the fall of his junior season. The two-sport athlete also plays basketball for King George as Maryland watched him in action last winter as they chipped away throughout his recruitment.

“[Brewer] still recruited me throughout the whole entire process, so that really was a plus for them,” White added.

The three-star target returned to Maryland for an official visit the weekend of June 9 before returning for an unofficial visit the following week when Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs hosting his camp inside SECU stadium. White then took an official visit to Virginia Tech the weekend of June 23, but as White bunkered down through July finalizing his decision, he returned to Maryland on July 29 to reconnect with the staff once more.

It was then when White became a silent commit in Maryland’s 2024 class with IBG officially projecting him to land in College Park shortly after. “I told the staff at the barbeque,” White added.

White becomes the second commitment from Virginia over the last ten days, joining Highland Springs QB Khristian Martin, while Phoebus (VA) edge rusher Anthony Reddick helped jumpstart the class back in the spring after running backs coach Latrell Scott joined the staff. White also becomes the third wide receiver commit for Maryland this cycle, joining three-stars Jahmari Powell-Wonson and Josiah McLaurin, as the Terps’ style on offense excites the newest commit.

“I think I fit really well with the offense they run. they love to throw the ball and a receiver loves a passing team. They showed me how they’d use me. Rakim Jarrett, showing me how they used him and showing me how they’d use me similar.”

As a junior, White finished with 1,039 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns on 37 catches and was named first team All-Region WR along with all-district DB. Now, he’ll look to end his high school career on a high note.

“Get that state championship. That’s all I’m worried about right now.”

White is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 15th-best prospect in Virginia.
