Maryland Set to Host Pac-12 Verbal This Weekend

St. Frances (MD) defensive lineman Sam Greene has been on Maryland’s radar dating back to the spring. Greene’s recruiting stock steadily began to rise through the summer as he gained offseason buzz before film from his second scrimmage in August helped take things to the next level. Fast forward today and Greene is roughly one month removed from announcing his commitment to USC.

That doesn’t mean his recruitment is over, though, as Maryland and Syracuse jumped into the mix after Greene released his midseason tape. With St. Frances expected to have a presence again this weekend, that means Greene will be among those to head to campus and it’s a visit he’s looking forward to.

“I’m really interested in Maryland. I’m very interested to see what they can do for me and how everything moves when I go up there,” he told Inside the Black and Gold. “Mostly because the guys that are there right now, most of the guys I know go to Maryland. It’s just the home team. I would really like the opportunity to put on for the home team, so we’ll see.” Greene’s parents have also welcomed the idea of playing closer to home. “They like Maryland. They like the facilities, the coaches, how they talk.”

Inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson is leading the charge and has done so since he first got wind of Greene. “He’s funny. Funny, he’s a real cool guy. I’ve been talking to coach Thompson since the spring, actually.” Head coach Mike Locksley has yet to connect with Greene since the offer, but that’s expected to change. “I’m supposed to talk to him when I go up for Northwestern.” After that, he’ll look to set up a return date.

“I’ll probably set up my official [visit] for a gameday.”

Maryland won’t be the only official visit with Syracuse, Texas A&M and USC also on Greene’s list. He was able to make the cross-country trip last weekend with teammate and LSU verbal Deshawn Womack in what ended up being Greene’s first trip to Los Angeles.

“Just how the city is, how different it is from any east coast college. It’s just very different. I got to meet the whole staff, everybody on campus.”

Greene is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the eighth-best prospect in Maryland.
