Maryland football returns to action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Northwestern in Evanston, and they’ll do so as comfortable favorites once again.
Maryland opened as a 13-point favorite over Northwestern, with the O/U set at 51.5.
Maryland will travel to Evanston for only the second time ever and the first time since 2020, when quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa made his Maryland debut in a 43-3 loss to open the COVID season.
Maryland pulled out a 31-24 win in College Park last season after Roman Hemby punched in 179 yards and three scores on the ground, including a 75-yard rushing touchdown. Beau Brade then came down with the game-sealing interception to seal the win at home.
Of course, Maryland also opened as a 13-point favorite against Illinois before suffering a humbling 27-24 loss at home prior to the bye week. Sitting at 5-2 (2-2), Maryland faces a Northwestern team coming off a 17-9 loss at Nebraska as the Cats have lost their last two Big Ten games. The Terps will look to extend the losing streak.
“I’ve got to have our team prepared to go play. We don’t make excuses. We did not play to our standard and it’s frustrating to watch because I still have a lot of faith and belief in his team. As I just told them, the adversity that we find ourselves in today, we put ourselves there so the only people that can get us out of it is us and we’ll use this next week to just evaluate every part of our program like we would always do during the bye week,” Locksley said following the Illinois loss. “Then obviously like I say, get some guys healthy in turn to get us ready to go to Chicago and play Northwestern in a couple of weeks. I’ve still got a lot of faith in his team. There’s still a lot of football left to be played. All of our goals are still ahead of us. But we’ve made it a little more difficult for ourselves and we’ve got to do the work that’s necessary to get us going back in the right direction.”
