Maryland football tracking in-state edge rusher

Maryland has added five commitments along the offensive line this cycle with official visit season giving the staff a chance to rebuild the trenches. Maryland is working to do the same on the other side of the ball, but a target to keep tabs through the cycle is Bowie (MD) defensive end Sultan Badmus.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher camped at Duke, Temple and Maryland last month, leading to his first two Power Five offers. Duke has been showing interest in Badmus dating back to the fall, but the Terps pulling the trigger first carried weight.

“Duke was showing interest in me for a long, long time but were kind of dragging their feet. Maryland was always upfront with where I stood with them,” Badmus told IBG. The Bowie standout made his way to campus in mid-June with tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin in consistent pursuit. “I like him because when I first met him, he was real straightforward which is one of the things I like Maryland for. They were very upfront. This was something other schools didn’t do. Maryland said come to camp, do good and we’ll offer you, see where it goes from there. I just like how upfront they were. I respect that.”

That led to the in-state school pulling the trigger four days later as he got a chance to talk with the coaching staff following the camp. “They said they love the way I move, I performed exactly how they expected I would,” Badmus said. “I was locked in. I treat camps like real games.”

An unofficial visit could come later this summer as the Terps take their interest into the fall. “They were talking to me about possibly doing a visit in December,” he added. Navy, James Madison, Richmond and Army have offered Badmus so far but after posting six sacks and three forced fumble as a junior, he’s emerged as one of the states underrated edge rushers.

“It feels great especially the school I’m coming from. I like Bowie a lot, but we don’t produce a lot of D1, Power Five athletes. I started playing football in tenth grade. When I first started playing, people started to notice I was good but they said I couldn’t do it from Bowie. I’ve never been the type to agree with people like that.”

At 6-foot-4, Badmus flashed his closing speed as an edge rusher for Bowie where his quick step has made him one of the pass rushers in the area. He is not yet rated by On3.
