Maryland football lands Calvert Hall TE JT Taggart

Maryland has landed its first public commitment from its second official visit weekend after Calvert Hall (MD) three-star tight end JT Taggart shut down his recruitment.

Taggart, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound tight end, committed to Maryland over West Virginia and Colorado among others as the Terps were involved with the in-state athlete since the start of the cycle.

Maryland entered his official visit weekend with the lead for Taggart over Colorado, though Taggart initially planned to make his commitment in the fall as the staff changed that timeline. Maryland has prioritized Taggart since January as assistants Brian Braswell and Kevin Sumlin have teamed up with Sumlin driving the bulk of recruiting efforts through the spring. “It’s a great relationship. He tells me if I go there, I’ll change as an athlete. I can fit into any scheme. I’m an athlete so I can adapt to the change. I can catch and I can block so I just need to be able to show that,” Taggart told IBG last month.

Taggart joins a tight end room that currently features Dylan Wade, Preston Howard and AJ Syzmanski as head coach Mike Locksley adds another athletic, long weapon to the room. Taggart suited up on Calvert Hall’s basketball team as a junior while he will line up as a defensive end in his senior season, in addition to tight end.

JT Taggart is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, checking in as the 26th-best prospect in Maryland.
