Maryland football 2024 spring ball preview: quarterbacks

Maryland is roughly one week away from kicking off spring ball and after reviewing the running backs, tight ends, wide receivers and offensive line, we take a look at the quarterback room ahead of the biggest quarterback battle of the Locksley era.

Spring roster

rJR Billy Edwards
rSO MJ Morris
rSO Jayden Sauray
rSO Cam Edge
rFR Champ Long

Where they stand

Maryland will kick off spring ball during the final week of March with a multitude of starting and rotation spots to begin ironing out. While the offensive line is a big focus, Maryland added reinforcements on the staff there with the expected hire of Damian Wroblewski alongside Brian Braswell this season. The biggest position group to watch, though, will be the QB room as transfer signee MJ Morris battles returning QBs Billy Edwards Jr. and Cam Edge with Champ Long and Jayden Sauray rounding out the room.

Morris has gotten a chance to begin immersing himself in the playbook ahead of spring ball, along with getting in additional QB work at least three times per week inside Jones-Hill House. I talked to someone whose been working with Morris since his HS days and has been prepping him ahead of spring ball. Morris was tabbed as a “super mature” incoming transfer who’s done well refining his technique and has shown off his “strong arm, great footwork, great mind, great feel for the game,” one contact who’s worked with Morris told IBG. He’s also drawn praise for how he’s gone about his workouts leading up to his potential starting opportunity. “He’s so coachable and he’s so eager to learn and get better. Adaptable. If he’s not getting something right he doesn’t want to just move onto the next drill until he gets it right,” he added.

There’s a strong belief that Morris steps into an opportunity–and needed fresh start–where he checks all the boxes with what Maryland needs to fill the void left by Taulia Tagovailoa. Now it’ll be about holding off Edwards Jr. and Edge in the spring, but “he’s coming in on a mission.”

How it translates into spring ball is the big question but that’s been consistent with the feedback around the Terps’ new QB since he joined the program during bowl prep. Billy Edwards also gets a chance to take a step forward in the room after his brother became the new TE coach at Richmond, a move that could aid the development of the returning QB. Cam Edge is still the darkhorse in the room and when you talk about folks who’ve routinely stayed after getting extra work, whether in the weight room or after practice, Edge is consistently in that group. Meanwhile, Jayden Sauray is set for his third spring ball looking for an opportunity to shake up the rotation, while Champ Long steps into his first spring ball after flashing in practice at times during his freshman season.
