Maryland spent a large portion of the summer finding a reliable depth piece in the frontcourt. After missing out on Efe Abogidi to the G-League, that led Maryland to Emilien with assistant Tony Skinn keeping tabs on the Canadian import. Emilien transferred from Western Michigan to St. Francis of Brooklyn last season where he would start at Power Forward. Last season Emilien would have a career year averaging a career best in points, rebounds, blocks and steals per game. Emilien scored 15 or more points in nine games for St. Francis last season. Emilien also played 9.2 more minutes then he did in any other previous season at Western Michigan. Emilien helped lead St. Francis in rebounding and blocks last season and was second in points for them as well. While St. Francis did not have a successful season Emilien was one of the bright spots on the team.
This season, expect for Emilien to put in solid minutes at power forward and given he’s the only experienced option off the bench in the frontcourt. Emilien isn’t tall but he has great jumping ability which correlates with his rebounding and will help him down low against the bigger guys that the Terps will face in conference play. Along with his jumping ability being a strength, he is also a solid mid range shooter. “Being a great mid-post and mid-range shooter. He really has the ability to stretch the floor, which will be a big advantage for us” said head coach Kevin Willard on the addition of Emilien to the new look Terps roster. Emilien will help give guys like Julian Reese and Donta Scott breaks while giving a solid veteran presence off the bench for the Terps.
This season for Emilien to be successful, he simply will need to do his job and have a positive +/- while on the floor. Emilien will not be needed to make big plays or be a star for the Terps. he will just be needed to help out off the bench and give solid minutes so Reese and Scott do not get tired from playing so much during games. If Emilien can have a positive +/- while on the court that will be a great advantage for the Terps. Emilien will also need to use his thletic ability to his advantage when going up against the bigger guys if he wants to be successful. Yes they might over power you but if he uses his athletic ability and speed to get around and wear their big guys down it will help guys like Reese and Scott for when they get in they will be able to have an easier time scoring and defending. Emilien will need to stretch the floor like Scott does to also help the offense have an easier time getting to the rim and creating open looks.
