Recap of 2021-22 season

Don Carey was the second leading scorer for a Georgetown Hoyas team that had an abysmal 2021-22 season with a record of 6-25 (0-19 Big East). When Carey got to the free-throw line, he knocked down those shots. His 91 percent free throw percentage led the Big East and ranked eighth in the nation. In a down year for the Hoyas, Carey proved he could be a high-volume scorer as he recorded 25 double-figure games, including five 20-point games in 28 starts and 33.5 minutes per game. He also earned the 2021-22 Big East Sportsmanship Award.

Outlook for 2022-23 season

Don Carey was another Hoya who transferred to Maryland (Qudus Wahab) and is expected to make a big impact in the Terps’ backcourt along with Charlotte 49ers transfer guard Jahmir Young. Carey committed to the Terps back in May.

What does he bring to the Terps? He is an efficient three-point shooter, he moves well without the ball, he can pass the ball well and create his own shot. He’ll definitely be an asset on the perimeter on both ends of the floor. Ball security will need to be a priority for whoever he guards because he’ll take it if they’re not careful.

He’ll be a starter, no question about it, where he fills the void left vacant by Eric Ayala one season ago. With his experience, he will be able to bring the backup guards along and make them better. Maryland doesn’t enter the season with multiple proven scoring options and with Jahmir Young’s ability to create around the rim and into the lane, Carey could complement the backcourt with his soft shooting touch. Carey will need to show he can defend on both ends of the court to remain an integral piece, an area that Ian Martinez could help in at the two, but offensively he’ll be leaned on to stretch the four. If Carey can prove to be a reliable outside shooting threat, the lane opens for other scorers like Jahmir, Julian Reese and Donta as Willard irons out his offense in year one.
