Maryland baseball battles takes down Charlotte in weekend series

Some nasty weather in the south forced Maryland and Charlotte to alter their series schedule for the weekend, but the teams were still able to get all three games in with the Terps taking the series. Here’s a look at how the weekend went for the Dirty Terps:

Friday: Charlotte 9, Maryland 5

The first game of the series was a rough one for Maryland and was the first time they dropped the opening game of a series in 2024. Kenny Lippman started for the Terps and was not as good as he was against Bryant last weekend. Lippman was only able to record one out, with Charlotte scoring three times off of him in the first thanks to Lippman walking four 49ers and hitting one to drive in a run as well. By the end of the third inning, the score was 7-0 Charlotte thanks to home runs by Rene Lastres and Juan Correa, and an RBI double by Carson Bayne. By the end of the fourth, Charlotte had taken a 9-0 lead. The Terps fought back scoring five in the sixth thanks to a two-run double by Elijah Lambros, and Jordan Crosland’s first career collegiate home run making the score 9-5. Cole Reynolds got the win for Charlotte throwing five innings and allowing just one run, while striking out 10 Terps.

Sunday (G1): Maryland 13, Charlotte 2

The Terps got their revenge from Friday in a big way in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader. The Hacopian brothers hit three home runs between them, including Eddie hitting his first of the season. Elijah Lambros homered as well, which made the score 6-0 in the top of the third. Maryland would add on three more in the eighth, and four more in the ninth to complete the rout in game one of Sunday’s double dip. Logan Koester followed up his good start last Saturday against Bryant with another really solid outing. Koester threw six innings allowing just the two earned runs, and striking out five.

Sunday (G2): Maryland 3, Charlotte 2 (7 innings)

Game three was only seven innings, but the Terps made the most of it. In the rubber game, Maryland was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 3rd thanks to an RBI single from freshman Brayden Martin. Charlotte was able to get two back in the fourth, but the Terps would rally. Two returners from last year’s team came through. Kevin Keister doubled to tie the game in the 6th, and Elijah Lambros drove him in to give Maryland a 3-2 lead, and Maryland was able to hold on from there. The Terps got incredible pitching from Logan Berrier, who relieved Joey McMannis. Berrier went the last four innings and didn’t allow a run. He only allowed one baserunner and struck out five. McMannis was solid as well.

Takeaways:

Bounce Back

Despite losing the opening game of the series, Maryland was able to put together a really impressive showing on Sunday sweeping the doubleheader and winning the series. Game one was a blowout, and the Terps looked good in all areas. In Game 2, there was some timely hitting in key spots and some stellar bullpen that led Maryland to the win.

Sunday’s are for the Hacopians:

Chris and Eddie both hit home runs in the same game for the first time in both of their Maryland careers. They combined for 7 RBIs in Maryland’s 13-2 win in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Another Series Win

The Terps continue to win on the weekends. They have not had a losing record on any weekend so far this season. Despite a non-conference schedule that some consider a bit weak to start the season, Maryland has done their part and has continued to win on weekends.

Up next: The Terps continue their seven-game road trip on Tuesday with a date in Emmitsburg with Mount St Mary’s. It will be the second matchup of the season between the two teams. The Terps won the first meeting 14-3 in their home opener back on February 20th. Following that, Maryland heads out west for a three-game series against the Portland Pilots. All four games can be streamed on ESPN+. All Maryland Baseball games can be listened to for free on the Maryland Baseball Network.
