Local lineman gets first look at Maryland, eyeing return for Virginia game

The high school season is gradually approaching with several scrimmages set for Friday throughout the DMV, while Maret (DC) will have a pair of scrimmages next week before their season opener against Joppatowne (MD) on September 1.

Junior lineman Grayson Reid will be a big piece for Maret this fall as guard/center will go both ways in the trenches with conditioning an area of emphasis to prepare for the grind.

“I’m feeling comfortable with the team. I trust everybody and physically and mentally, I’ve made a lot of strides,” Reid told IBG. “I’m trying to be the best locker room guy now.” Reid projects as a center at the next level, but for now, the 6-foot-2, 270-pound lineman is focused on ensuring the weight he adds is muscle mass.

“I need to be mobile. I’ve been talking to every coach that I know, they said when I get to college, I’ll be able to put 15 to 20 pounds of muscle. I’m not worried about that at all, as long as I’m staying strong because I have to play both sides of the ball.”

Duke, Pitt, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Boston College have all extended verbal offers with three schools the first to reach out on August 1. “Virginia Tech, Duke, Maryland,” Reid added. “A lot of other schools have been checking in, getting to know me and letting me know they’ll watch me.”

The interest from Maryland began well before August 1 as Reid picked up back in May, while the 2025 target made his way to campus back on July 29 for his first true unofficial visit to meet the coaching staff.

“I talked to Maryland right before it was uplifted. Me and my teammate DJ Hill went up there. I finally met coach Braswell to not just be able to put a name to the face, but to have that interaction with him,” Reid added. “We talked for a couple of minutes. Most likely I’ll play center at the next level with my size, so he was making sure I was honing in on my skills, I’m feeling confident but also that I’m having fun. He wants to see where everything will take me but also just introduce himself in person, so that was really good.”

The lax environment in College Park gave Reid a chance to get a clear impression of his position recruiter.

“It was pretty brief but he’s a respectable coach. I was going to go to the Maryland camp on June 19 but then I got my ankle rolled up on the week before, but I plan to get back for another game then watch how he coaches and how the players interact with him, just looking for those player-coach connections.”

Reid is looking to make that a reality when Maryland hosts Virginia on September 15.

“We’re playing that game that Thursday and then one of my teammates freshman year is a safety at Virginia so I think that’d be pretty cool to get out there and watch.”

Grayson Reid is not yet rated by On3.
