Kevin Willard hires former UCF assistant, Baltimore native Kevin Norris

Head coach Kevin Willard has now filled the third vacancy on his staff as the program has announced the hire of former UCF assistant Kevin Norris as Maryland’s newest assistant.

“We are excited to add Kevin to our staff,” said Kevin Willard via press release. “He is a veteran coach who understands how to develop players and is a tenacious recruiter.”

Norris previously served as an assistant at UCF since 2016 as the Knights have since posted a 131-87 record, including an NCAA Tournament appearance back in 2019. He’s also previously served as an assistant at Florida Gulf Coast under then-head coach Andy Enfield, helping the program pull off the historic tournament upset vs. Georgetown then San Diego State.

Norris, a Baltimore native, played at Miami (FL) under former head coach Leonard Hamilton where he still holds the record for career steals (208). He then went to play professionally overseas before transitioning into coaching where he was started at Tallahassee Community College back in 2007.

Norris fills the role left vacant by former assistant Mike Jones, who was named the new head coach at Old Dominion. His expected hire would also give Maryland a renewed presence in Baltimore on the staff after both Tony Skinn and Tevon Saddler became head coaches following Willard’s first season with the program.

More on Norris:

A former guard at the University of Miami, Norris helped mentor one of the best backcourts in the nation in 2018-19, as BJ Taylor and Aubrey Dawkins both earned all-conference honors from The American. Taylor earned his first all-conference honor in 2016-17, while shooting guard Matt Williams set UCF and American Athletic Conference records for three-pointers made in a game, in a single season and in a career.
