Priority running back target visiting Maryland for spring game

Maryland football will wrap up spring ball on Saturday with its annual Red-White game, and one priority target out of Virginia is set to make his way to campus as Hayfield (VA) three-star Jeff Overton Jr. is expected to visit College Park on Saturday, a source tells IBG.

The visit comes roughly two weeks after the top target included Maryland in his final five alongside Ohio State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Duke as assistants Latrell Scott and Lance Thompson have led the way over the last 18 months.

Overton, a 5-foot-9.5, 190-pound running back, has been a familiar face in College Park over the last two years, including visiting for multiple home games during the 2022 season, as this weekend is expected to be one of two trips to Maryland in the coming months.

The reigning Gatorade Player of the Year will begin his official visits with a trip to Ohio State beginning May 31 before heading to Virginia the weekend of June 7. Maryland is set to host the Virginia playmaker the weekend of June 14 before wrapping up the month with an official visit to Virginia Tech the weekend of June 21.

With potentially two running backs departing following the 2024 season, Maryland will look to restock the room alongside Nolan Ray and DeJuan Williams. DeMatha (MD) three-star Bud Coombs has narrowed his focus on Maryland with Michigan and Texas A&M rounding out his top group, but with baseball season in full swing and finalizing a visit date a continued battle, his recruitment is expected to continue into June with Maryland the lone school expected to host the 5-foot-9 running back. A source added the weekend of June 14 is the target for Coombs, the same weekend that both Overton and Noah Chambers are expected to officially visit.

With Overton looking to make his commitment ahead of his senior season, Maryland will look to fend off the in-state suitors while Ohio State has remained a steady presence through the spring.

Overton is coming off a dominant junior season after posting 2,329 yards and 44 total touchdowns while also averaging over eight yards per carry in the state championship game, which ended in a win over Highland Springs. In his three seasons of high school football, Overton has rushed for nearly 6,600 yards and 102 touchdowns.

Jeff Overton is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 16th-best prospect in Virginia and 40th-best running back in the 2025 class.
