In-state verbal ready to put pen to paper after official visit

Three months after St. Mary’s Ryken (MD) three-star offensive lineman Davon Watkins decided to stay home and commit to Maryland, the 6-foot-5 commit made his way to campus with his family for his official visit. Watkins is plenty familiar with Maryland having made his way to campus in the years prior, whether for unofficial visits, gameday visits, or camps, but this weekend gave the local lineman a chance to get to see Maryland in a more relaxed setting.

“I would say the weight training staff and the nutrition,” Watkins said about his highlight during his official visit. “If they want you to eat more or eat less, they’re going to stay on top of you and they’re going to show the type of stuff you should be eating.”

Watkins wasn’t the only offensive line commit on campus as Trevor Szymanski, the second local lineman who joined Maryland’s 2024 class this fall, was on campus for his weekend official with transfer lineman Marcus Dumervil around the duo throughout. “I was with Trevor [Szymanski] for a little bit and I was with Marcus [Dumervil]. Marcus was basically saying to just keep working and take care of myself.”

Meanwhile, Watkins’s relationship with offensive line coach Brian Braswell as the three-star lineman solidified coming out of the weekend.

“He’s a pretty laid-back guy. Once you get to know him more, he’s a pretty fun guys to be around,” Watkins added.

There isn’t any late drama expected around the St. Mary’s Ryken lineman with Watkins set to sign with Maryland on signing day, giving him a chance to sign with the hometown school.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve just been working up to this point and it’s exciting to just sign the paper, make it official.”

Watkins is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 21st-best prospect in Maryland.
