In-state athlete set for first gameday experience at Maryland

Maryland saw a number of local targets make their way to campus for the season opener last weekend, headlined by four-star Ernest Willor. Four-star Jaylen Harvey is also set to visit Maryland next week when they host Virginia, but the Terps will see one of the state’s top prospects in the 2025 class make his way to campus this upcoming weekend.

DeMatha (MD) three-star running back Bud Coombs has been up to visit Maryland several times in the past, but this weekend will mark his first gameday experience in College Park and it’s one he’s looking forward to. “I’m going to Maryland this weekend. I can’t wait,” Coombs told IBG.

Coombs has been able to build an early relationship with running backs coach Latrell Scott, but it’s tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin leading the way for the 5-foot-10, 190-pound athlete as the Terps have been among the most consistent schools early.

“We talk a lot. Ever since August 1, he’s been consistent with me, hitting me up a lot. They’ve been recruiting me hard. I definitely apreciate that. I appreciate how [Sumlin] continues to call me. He shows genuine interest and it seems like he truly cares about his players, not just about football.”

Coombs is off to a strong start to his junior season, turning heads as he and quarterback Denzel Gardner have given the Stags’ offense juice early on. “I feel a lot more comfortable, playing a lot better. I think it’s just my power, my elusiveness.”

Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss and Penn State have all extended offers to the high-three star thus far, while Coombs added he’s looking to make his way to Virginia Tech and Stanford later this fall.

Coombs is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 266th-best prospect in the country and the eighth-best prospect in Maryland.
