Four-star IOL Jaylen Gilchrist talks upcoming Maryland official, SEC suitors

Salem (VA) interior offensive lineman Jaylen Gilchrist has been a top priority for Maryland in the 2025 cycle with running backs coach Latrell Scott leading the way with the 6-foot-5, 305-pound four-star.

That consistency has Maryland in the top group as they work to move into pole position in his recruitment.

“Coach Scott and coach Locks, coach Braswell. That’s the trio,” Gilchrist told IBG. “It’s gotten to the point where, yes they’re coaches, but I’m at the point where I don’t even have to look at them as coaches but as mentors. I value that because football, it’s not life, it’s temporary.”

Aside from football, Gilchrist has taken note of what’s around the University of Maryland. “I love seafood. And Maryland, it’s a place of many things to do. You’ll never get bored here.”

Maryland is currently in line to host Gilchrist for an official visit the weekend of June 21, but they’ll look to dethrone South Carolina as the four-star confirmed the Gamecocks are his leader heading into visits.

As for who else is in the mix, Gilchrist added that Virginia remains under consideration while both Alabama and Georgia are in the mix for official visits.

“I talked to coach [Stacy] Searels not too long ago. We’re just cracking it up and Alabama, we’re just dibbling and dabbling and getting to know each other. They came by and we diced it up but we’re still working on an official.”

With plans to make his commitment in July, Gilchrist explains what he’s looking to learn more about during his extended visits through June.

“Academics and on a day to day basis, how’s the community? If I went there for non-football purposes, would I like it or not? It’s just the realism and non-fluff. Don’t tell me what I want to hear, tell me what I need to hear.”

Jaylen Gilchrist is rated a four-star prospect and a 92 overall by On3, checking in as the fourth-best prospect in Virginia.
