Decision day arrives for OL Ryan Howerton

It’s officially decision day for Pallotti (MD) three-star offensive tackle Ryan Howerton as he’s set to announce his decision.

Howerton, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound tackle, will announce his decision at 4 PM among a final three including Maryland, Pitt and West Virginia.

The Mountaineers were the first school to host Howerton for an official visit the weekend of June 9 as co-defensive coordinator ShaDon Brown and offensive line coach Matt Moore have led the charge since their January 13 offer. Tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin picked up Maryland’s pursuit of Howerton, a chase that began his freshman season, as the Terps were next to host the athletic local lineman the weekend of June 16. Pitt was the second Power Five school to extend Howerton and offer as the longtime pursuit paid off with an official visit the weekend of June 23.

Howerton elevated his stock on the camp circuit through the spring, winning MVP honors at both the Under Armour All-America camp in Baltimore then Rivals in consecutive weekends. Maryland has made the offensive line a priority this cycle with five commitments heading into mid-July with a chance to add more, but the potential addition of Howerton would give the room an athletic tackle to fortify the future of the room. Veteran tackle DJ Glaze hosted the three-star prospect on his Maryland official as the staff rolled out the red carpet for him and his family.

“It’s the home team. All black coaching staff. I believe in what coach [Mike] Locksley is telling me, how he wants to make people better,” Howerton told IBG. “He wants to give back to the people who helped him get there. The way he was talking, I believe he wants to make everybody great and wants to be the first black head coach to win a national championship. I can really see that happening.”

Howerton is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 21st-best prospect in Maryland.
