Clinton WR Josiah McLaurin commits to Maryland after official visit

Maryland has landed its second wide receiver in the 2024 class after Clinton (NC) wide receiver Josiah McLaurin announced his commitment following his official visit.

McLaurin committed to Maryland over East Carolina and Virginia Tech while Pitt, App State, Georgia Tech and Old Dominion were among the schools to extend offers. Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer jumped into the mix for the 6-foot, 180-pound wideout back after stopping through his school during the May evaluation period while running backs coach Latrell Scott filled in as the secondary recruiter.

“He’s a great person to be around,” McLaurin told IBG about his first conversation with Brewer. “I can already tell. I get that vibe from him. We were talking about NIL and what positions he wanted me to play. We talked about TBIA Foundation a little bit.”

“Just the environment here is different. This is the first college I’ve been to and I actually felt like home,” McLaurin told IBG following his decision.

McLaurin joins the class as a slot receiver where he and running back coach Latrell Scott were able to sit down to watch film.

“They can use me as a hybrid because I play both and that’s what they’re looking for. We watched film. I was with coach [Latrell] Scott and he showed me how they use their players, what play they ran then the next slide was my film and it was the exact same thing. No college had ever done that so that’s when I knew this was it,” he added. “It’s like my high school offense right now and it’s just perfect. And the OC [Josh Gattis] loves me.”

McLaurin followed through with a verbal commitment on Saturday night.

McLaurin quickly set an official visit to Maryland shortly after the offer, the second trip after officially visiting East Carolina last weekend. McLaurin originally had plans to officially visit Pitt next weekend, though the Panthers scouted the shifty athlete as a running back target as McLaurin shifted his attention elsewhere. The Hokies were in the mix for an official visit after rounding out McLaurin’s top three back on June 2, but after 48 hours in College Park, the Terps sealed the deal.

McLaurin now joins Baltimore City College (MD) three-star wide receiver Jahmari Powell-Wonson as wide receiver commits in Maryland’s class.

As a junior, McLaurin posted 903 rushing yards along with 490 receiving yards for 22 combined touchdowns, leading Clinton in both categories.

McLaurin is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 31st-best prospect in North Carolina.
