Big board mover: more local recruiting momentum

Maryland is fresh off its third commitment of the week with Spalding (MD) three-star linebacker Keyshawn Flowers announcing his commitment to the Terps over Miami (FL) and Notre Dame. Maryland could keep the buzz going into the weekend with Flowers (MD) three-star cornerback Lloyd Irvin set to announce at noon on Saturday, but now, St. Frances (MD) composite four-star running back Dejuan Williams has set his commitment date.

Williams will announce his decision at 3 PM on Sunday with the Terps the team best positioned to land him. With that, I’ve upgraded the in-state prospect to ‘hot’ on the big board.

Maryland has been in consistent pursuit of the 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back dating back to the beginning of the recruiting cycle with inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson a mainstay throughout his recruitment. The Terps long had Williams’ mom in their corner, but the spring gave the St. Frances feature back a chance to gradually build his relationship with new running backs coach Latrell Scott while the desire to stay close to home always loomed large.

Williams released a top eight in late May with Boston College, Cincinnati, Maryland, Oregon, Pitt, Stanford, Syracuse and Virginia Tech still in the mix with Boston College proving to be the biggest challenger down the stretch. With at least one running back this cycle, Maryland prioritized Williams and Good Counsel (MD) four-star running back Dilin Jones through the cycle with Jones expected to take his recruitment into the fall. Williams, however, was back in College Park last weekend for his official visit.

“I had a great time. I met with the coaching staff, they’re all great people. I had a meeting with coach Locksley and he said that he needed a player like me, a receiver running back time.”

Williams is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 12th-best prospect in Maryland.
