Bats get hot for Maryland baseball heading into midweek game against JMU

After stumbling against Georgetown during last week’s game at The Bob, Maryland baseball bounced back for their 18th consecutive series win against a Big Ten foe, winning two of three against Ohio State.

In game one of the Rutgers series, the Terps came away with a nail biter 6-4. The Terps rode a three run seventh inning to the win. Jason Savacool would get the start and pitch 6.2 innings giving up six hits and three runs while also striking out three batters on the day. However Tommy Kane would wind up getting the win for the Terps and Nigel Belgrave would earn the save. Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw once again had a strong weekend and started it off with a pair of home runs in game one. Lorusso led the scoring effort on the day going two for four with three RBIs. Kevin Keister and Shaw were the two others to drive in runs on the day for the Terps.

In game two, it was the pitching that stole the show. The Terps would go on to win yet another close game, this time by a score of 4-3. Nick Dean got the win on the day. Dean pitched six innings, giving up just two runs, while also striking out five batters. the Terps got the bulk of their scoring in the fifth inning when they scored three of their runs off two home runs by Zach Martin and Lorusso. Martin’s home run also drove in Elijah Lambros who also ended up having what would end up being the game winning RBI in the eighth inning driving in Bobby Zmarzlak off a sacrifice fly out. Rutgers would score in the ninth inning to cut the Terps lead to one but David Falco Jr. would shut down the Scarlet Knights comeback efforts to seal the one run victory.

In game three, the Terps would drop their one and only game of the series in a 14-8 loss. The Terps were finally able to get their offense going but what seems to be the story of the season, the pitching staff was just not able to do enough to get the win. Kyle McCoy got the start in game three and pitched four innings. In those four innings, McCoy gave up eight hits four runs and two walks. The Terps bullpen ended up having an even rougher day giving up nine more runs on the day. On offense, it was an all around effort from the team. Five players had RBIs including three alone from Luke Zeisloft.

Maryland then traveled to Columbus, Ohio as Friday’s 7-5 win gave the Terps a 20-win season for the 12th-straight season. In Saturday’s 3-2 win, Ian Petrutz and Eddie Hacopian knocked in RBIs in the top of the eighth to give Maryland the go-ahead run to secure the season win. Maryland struggled in the season finale, failing to score until the sixth inning despite Nick Lorusso recording a three-hit day. Maryland would eventually fall 13-8, but they’d bounce back at home.

Maryland’s bats caught hot again in Tuesday’s matchup against George Washington, belting their seventh grand slam in the win with the Terps having a chance to shatter Arizona State’s 20-year old record of 14 grand slams in one season. Meanwhile, Matt Shaw belted a three-run homer for his 42nd career home run, one shy of the record held by Paul Schager.

Maryland returns to action on Wednesday evening against James Madison with first pitch set for 6:30 PM at The Bob. Maryland enters Wednesday’s contest tied for third in the Big Ten with Michigan State with a 6-3 record in conference play.
